Course Overview:

The LTA level 1 (Assistant) course is the first course on your coaching journey here in the UK through the LTA. As it's the first course it is very basic and simple, but it is mainly an introduction to coaching here in the UK. The course is aimed at players, parents so they can gain insight into the world of coaching and of course upcoming coaches. To be eligible to take the course you simply have to be 16 years of age or older and have a signed letter of deployment at a local tennis club for your coaching work experience during the course. The fee ranges from £250-300 to apply for the course. The LTA have also introduced last year a female only level 1 course, to encourage more female coaches here in the UK, which we definitely need more of! The cost for that course is £150.

Course Contents:

  • You will be given at least a month to complete the course, the time ranges between a month - 3 months, to give you enough time to complete all you need to do!
  • You have to attend 2 days on court, if you miss one then you will have to go to a different centre and complete the day you missed, before you can officially pass the course.
  • You have coursework to complete, on LTA learn. This will be a mix of answering questions on the topics of the course, lots of self reflection and a couple video tasks. My suggestion is to make sure you don't leave it all to the last minute, space it out across the length of the course so you don't get too stressed!
  • 4 hours of on court coaching experience at your local club, assisting in some sessions. You will have some feedback sheets to give to your lead coach for them to fill out about your time on court, and you must submit these also.

What happens at the end?

  • You will gain your level 1 qualification and certificate.
  • Now able to to help assist at your local tennis clubs, and potentially be paid and gain lots of knowledge and experience.
  • Gain basic knowledge of how to coach (Mostly focused on beginners and young kids groups.)
  • Now eligible to apply for the level 2 course.
  • You may have to do a readiness test to gain access to the level 2 course!
  • 12 CPD credits
